Decorating Around the Planet: Creative Amsterdam Style

Decorating Around the Planet: Creative Amsterdam Style

With a rich history which includes Delft tiles and Vermeer, Amsterdam now is home to many inspirational independent designers and artists that always appear to be ahead of the curve. I was lucky enough to devote a little portion of my honeymoon on a houseboat in Amsterdam, also I shall always remember the wonderful creative energy of the region. Come along as we peek inside the vibrant, colorful world of interiors.

Ida Lifestyle

Fearless colour. During Amsterdam, I noticed shops and houses decorated with a far more adventurous approach to colour than we often see here from the States. In Ilaria’s home, vibrant aqua and orange yellow amalgamated with crimson, pink, pink, florals and multi-hued granny crochet for a bold look.

Quirky Information. Dutch photographer and blogger Ilaria Chiaratti’s home is filled with quirky, one of a type details like the vibrant tapestry, floral published Moose sculpture, and diverse mixture of chairs in her dining area.

Holly Marder

This South Holland home gets the diverse mix spot-on, using a mirrored wooden dining table, mix-and-match chairs, vibrant glass tulip lights, and a large original painting from dark tones.

Earth Fur

Marlous Snijder creates one-of-a-kind felt animals for her shop, Planet Fur, and pours an equal amount of creativity into her beautiful home in Utrecht. I really like the cable tulip-shaped mild and electric orange kitty lamp!

Earth Fur

Another view into Marlous’s home shows a pale lime accent wall and artsy mild, with hot-pink chair cushions in the area just beyond. It is a look that is bright and cheerful — the type of home that makes you smile when you walk into the door!

Ninainvorm

A concentrate on art. I have been a lover of Amsterdam-based artist Nina van de Goor for many years now. I love her daring, vibrant prints and distinctive hand-painted classic china. It’s no wonder that this gifted artist has a way with displaying art in her home.

Ninainvorm

Here, Nina has filled a large wall over her sofa with an eclectic mixture of art. Notice how she squeezed a few bits in over the door, emphasizing the gallery-like feel.

Elsewhere in Nina’s home, two large Expedit shelving units from Ikea store novels as well as the classic dishes Nina utilizes in her work. The top surface functions as rotating display space for paintings, framed prints, pottery and vintage treasures.

Blogger and classic collector Kay de Bruin also has an eye for art, gravitating towards interesting indie pieces. This grouping works superbly well against the dusky blue wall of a kid’s room.

Another corner of Kay’s home shows an eclectic assortment of art prints and photography, unified with slim black eyeglasses. This soft putty grey is just another wall color which works beautifully with art.

Iris

A completely different take on the art wall, that this view of Dutch writer Iris’s bedroom shows a beautiful loose canvas published with a favorite text.

Iris

In Iris’s living room, she has hung a trio of original paintings. As much as I love art prints, it will feel refreshing to see original work in the home, too!

Hofman Dujardin Architecten

Playful and adventuresome. Dutch designers are something of a risk-taking group. Take this light fixture, for instance — it reminds me a small giant spider, but at a cool, artsy way. I find Dutch design exciting because of this openness to think beyond the box, so it won’t necessarily appeal to everybody!

Iris

In Iris’s son’s area, a parade of enormous animals tramps across the walls, while imaginative toys like a giant wooden crane and little red car invite drama.

Holly Marder

In the trompe l’oeil background to the surrealist-inspired hat and mustache hanging across the cradle, this nursery is a far cry from all I visit here from the States!
