Country Meets Coastal Close a California Beach

Country Meets Coastal Close a California Beach

After raising six kids, this California couple found themselves in an empty nest and promptly flocked to the shore. Their Cape Cod–style house a block from the beach was an opportunity to lighten up, enjoy relaxed nation coastal style and entice their older kids to see. They chose a house that a builder had constructed for himself, and it had great bones and details. Interior designer Darci Goodman worked together with those pockets, adding new furniture, paint colors, rugs, window treatments, light fixtures and textiles.

The pair had a few pieces of furniture and an extensive folk art collection. The artwork, their personal style and the beach inspired this eclectic combination.

The front door opens into the living space, which consequently makes the initial impression. “This room defines the style of house,” says Goodman. The folk art, the spouse’s love of crimson and current events influenced the colour choices. “We were decorating right before the election, so we were all in a patriotic disposition,” Goodman says.

A sisal rug, linen sofas, rattan chairs and red, white and blue Ralph Lauren fabrics create a relaxed coastal look without going overboard.

Doors open to a terrace facing street and the sidewalk. “The terrace functions as an extension of their living space,” Goodman says. “The homeowners like interacting with neighbors walking.”

The living room and dining room share one large open area, therefore Goodman used the same window curtains and sisal rugs in each area and repeated some of the accent fabrics.

These dining chairs from the prior Mediterranean-style house originally had a gold-tone finish; Goodman had them painted black, then used a mixture of fabrics for seat cushions for a whimsical and relaxed look. A mason jar chandelier adds state style overhead, whilst shell cut the window treatments brings in a beach detail.

A herringbone brick flooring and the couple’s precious rooster and iron drinkers give the kitchen a country seem. A blue and white coral print seat and new colour on the island add coastal style.

Existing beadboard on the island and cabinets works nicely with both nation and coastal designs. A new ocean-inspired paint color topped with a glaze treatment created the island beadboard detailing stand out.

The prior hot pink Venetian plaster with the bathroom’s walls wasn’t working with the house’s new design, therefore Goodman coated the walls and ceiling in a blue. “In a powder room, I attempt to cover the walls and the ceiling in precisely the same way, while it’s paint or wallpaper,” she states. “In a small bathroom, I like to feel like I’m sitting inside a present.”

Upstairs in the master bedroom, a batik floral print on the window treatments and gloomy bedding bring about sea colors. A wall of faux 1-by-6 driftwood planks adds beachy texture.

The seat and ottoman came from the old property. “They were both leather and had the feeling of a men’s library,” Goodman says. She maintained some leather but lightened it by covering the cushions in a blue and white print.

Elegant Calacatta marble and rustic brick flooring in the master bath create an eclectic look. The window treatment is the same fabric as the curtains in the bedroom.

A private porch with shingled walls, a sisal carpet and seashells embedded in the fireplace surround creates a beachy retreat off the bedroom.
